Yes. My group performed a private show for a family with four non-verbal autistic children. One of our group members acted as sign language interpreter. We then had the kids come up and try the drums. Their parents were almost in tears at how responsive the kids were. It was a very moving experience. |

In the past I have (with a colleague) taught classes to young adults with autism. They wanted to perform a piece on their annual summer fair at their place of employment. We taught them a new song, made up mostly by themselves, in 5 classes of 1,5h in 5 weeks. Afterwards me and my colleague performed together with the young adults on the summer fair. Right now I am tutoring a class of 7 students who are following classes at the Araumi Daiko Academy but are sometimes struggling to keep up. Once every two weeks we meet for a class of 2h and we repeat the exercises they did in class. Where necessary I give them ‘tips and tricks’ so that they can start with a head start when they go to their next lesson. |

Not specifically for taiko… But I work with ‘special needs’ people for my job – I am a trauma counsellor working with clients who have PTSD. I use my taiko knowledge to inform my rhythm therapy and sound therap work. I don’t use the traditional “don-don” ‘heartbeat’ rhythm when working with clinets, instead I use the taiko heartbeat “San doko”. The approach to taiko I also teach my clients in approaching the djembe (and other) instruments we use as it sets the scene for the therapeutic work we do. |
Performed at elementary, high school, college classes, community festivals, matsuri, weddings funerals, birthdays, and in prison. I have performed twice in prison. Our to our show passed quickly. This was during prisoners free time and they were able to leave and go watch a movie or play cards. But they all stayed to watch us. All the Native Americans sat in the front row. |
Yes. Currently an Assistant with Triangle Special Taiko (http://triangletaiko.org/Home/triangle-special-taiko/). My former group performance at a school for the deaf with a “try the drums” portion after the performance, performances at senior homes (also w/a “try the drums” portion), school/kids performances, for local Japanese organizations’ members. |
We do performances at schools and teach the children Ei Ja Nai Ka. It is educational for them and they love the movement of the dance and the chant. We performed at a park shelter house with a stage where our community has held a “Variety Show” series for decades. Almost all of the people who showed up were of the older generation. We were not sure how they would react to the show, but they were one of our most enthusiastic audiences. They had never seen anything like it and loved it! We got a standing ovation and they screamed for an encore. |
My group has had a few gigs which were for a school. The kids usually eat it up! |

I also have a long term group for LGBTQ+ teens called Irodori Taiko. I also have a long term cross-community taiko group which brings together children from different schools, one Protestant, one Catholic to build bridges and community. |
Yes, a performance for nonverbal autistic children. One of our members is a sign language expert, and was able to communicate with the kids during the show, and after when they got yo try the drums. |
We perform for diverse audiences, we adapt to their needs. If they would like audience participation we adapt instruments so they can participate with us. |
